Breton Shirt Company: Five Outfits for Autumn

We might only just have waved the kids off on their first day back at school after the summer holidays, but it’s time. Time to start thinking about your cosy, comfortable, effortlessly chic autumnal wardrobe.

Even if you’re the type of person who loves long days of bright sunshine, it’s hard not to get a little excited about the prospect of curling up in a big wingback chair in a gastro pub, or sipping coffee in your favourite café, rain beating on the window, while you revel in being warm and dry.

Here are our favourite ways to wear our timeless Breton shirts this autumn. Because stripes never go out of style — even when it’s chilly outside.

Scarf At The Ready

If you already have a favourite Breton shirt (we love the Bateau Mariniere and the Breton Royale for classic cool) there’s no better way to bring it into your autumn wardrobe than with a few well-chosen accessories.

Add a cute scarf for a touch of alternative Parisienne cool, and to keep the chill off naturalement.

The great thing about adding a scarf to your Breton-inspired outfit is that it doesn’t have to match your stripes. Clashing is part of the fun, and in Paris you’ll often see women pairing paisley with their famous Breton tops. Be bold!

Under Your Dungarees

Falling leaves and darker evenings mean one thing to us at Breton Shirts towers — a perfect excuse to get the dungarees out of storage.

Versatile and chic, dungarees can be worn for almost any occasion. Dress them up like a playsuit, or style them casual for a quick trip to the high street for essentials. They are easy to wear, and it takes little to no brainpower to create a perfect outfit with them. Ideal for those cold winter mornings.

 Soft Stripes

Did you know we create Breton shirts in a thicker material, too?

Now you can enjoy the chic style of your favourite stripes as the perfect sweater. Have you ever heard of anything more dreamy?

Our Le Mode Pull is a gorgeous interpretation of classic heavyweight Breton jumpers worn by sailors on the Atlantic coast. If you’re not into knitted jersey however, our 300gsm cotton Submariner collection adds thick cotton to a classic cut and perfect stripes to create the idea winter top.

May you never have to resort to the dog walking fleece to brave the great outdoors again.

Choose a Statement Coat or Blazer

We love a great coat or jacket with a Breton shirt. It just polishes the look, and makes a silhouette feel all the more put-together.

For some, a leather or leather-look biker jacket works for their style perfectly, adding a touch of bad-girl edge to a prim and proper outfit. We have to say that this look is one of our favourites.

Of course, it would be remiss of us to ignore the classic longline mac. A Parisienne staple, there’s no woman who’d be caught dead without a mac in buff, tan or black to complete her outfit as she scooters through the city. We also love a chic black blazer, seen here (and pictured below) on the ever-stylish lady behind the 'Bretons and Blue Jeans' Instagram account.

And then there’s the camel coat. Effortlessly chic and totally timeless, if you invest wiseley on a cut, length and shade that suits you well, you could be pulling this out of your wardrobe year after year and still remaining the most stylish person on your street.

So tell us, belles amis, how will you be wearing your Breton this Autumn?
