Royals Wearing Breton Shirts

A Breton-striped top is an essential item for any wardrobe. These comfy shirts with their statement stripes can be worn as part of a casual ensemble, or they can be dressed up for more formal events. And that’s exactly what some of our favourite celebrities have done.

From royals to fashion editors, here are some very recognisable faces sporting the Breton stripe.

Kate Middleton

The Duchess of Cambridge has been spotted on numerous occasions wearing a Breton top. She sure loves her stripes! She often pairs her Breton tops with skinny jeans for a casual look, as she did at the 2015 Festival of Polo charity tournament.

More recently, in a video message of support for Sir Ben Ainslie’s sailing team, the Duchess sported a nautical navy striped top, just barely peeking out from underneath the sailing team’s windbreaker. Can anyone say sporty?

Anna Wintour

If there’s anyone whose fashion sense you can trust, it’s certainly legendary fashion editor Anna Wintour.

The pandemic allowed us a look into Anna’s work-from-home style when she shared this picture of herself on the Vogue Instagram account. She looks quite comfy and casual in her Breton jumper and skinny jeans, don’t you think?

Meghan Markle

Breton-striped tops appear to be a royal favourite, because the Duchess of Sussex has also been seen quite a few times in these fashionable nautical shirts.

On the last day of her 2019 tour of Morocco, the Duchess wore a black striped Breton top, which she styled with black skinny jeans, a green jacket and suede boots. This is just proof that you can wear a Breton stripe with anything! It might also be worth noting that Meghan was seven months' pregnant, so her Breton shirt fit comfortably over her baby bump.

Madonna

Madonna might not be royalty, but what the Queen of Pop shares in common with the royals on this list is the effortless way in which she can pull off a Breton shirt.

In a photoshoot, the iconic singer lounged on a sofa in a cropped, off-shoulder Breton shirt that looked extra cool alongside her spiky leather belt and bracelets. Speaking of cool, Madonna also wore a Breton shirt back in the late 80s, when she donned a messy pixie cut.

If you have a thick black belt, you can recreate Madonna’s 80s look with a pair of jeans and the Denim Breton, available here.

Sophie Wessex

Last on our list is the Countess of Wessex, who’s rocked a Breton shirt on a handful of public appearances.

Last year, she delivered meals to NHS staff in a laidback ensemble consisting of a navy Breton top and skinny jeans. On another occasion, she paired a Breton shirt with espadrilles and white sunglasses. The Countess is just another reminder that royals pull off casual Breton looks so well!

We hope you’ll take notes from your favourite Breton stripe-wearing celebs and royals the next time you reach into your wardrobe.

Until next time…
