Celebs in Breton Shirts: Our Favourite Looks

Breton Shirts have been a style classic for more than 200 years, and it’s easy to see why. Fresh, chic styling never goes out of fashion, and by choosing your own unique way to accessorise, you can update it to suit every season.

When we began the Breton Shirt Company we were inspired by the traditional Breton shirts made originally for the French navy and worn all over France, but we couldn’t help but turn our heads at some of the stripy masterpieces worn by famous fashionistas too! It just goes to show, whether you’re red carpet royalty or actual Royal Family royalty, a solid Breton stripe is always the right choice.

Of course, the first ever Breton fashionista was Coco Chanel. In 1917 her style-savvy brain saw French sailors in Biarritz and she took those stripes straight to the catwalk. The style took off on the streets soon after, with stars such as Brigitte Bardot making the iconic look her own.

Perhaps what’s so beloved about Breton stripes is their ability to raise an outfit beyond casual. They are smart without trying, bright without being garish, and most importantly, they’re always, always stylish.

The beautiful young Royals also love Breton stripes. We loved seeing the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton wearing stripes as part of a classy, understated everyday look. What was especially lovely was her nod to the origins of Breton, with bright brass buttons on her smartly-tailored military-style blazer. Paired with skinny jeans and a natural makeup look, this is smart casual done perfectly.

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, also loves a Breton top (and who doesn’t?). She was seen out in a classic black and white striped Breton, dressed down with black jeans and boots. A look we can all carry off!

On a totally different note, we also enjoyed Caroline Flack’s pairing of her Breton top with a bold leopard faux fur jacket, proving our suspicions that Breton stripes can be paired with anything!

This look, complete with St Christopher necklace, beachy waves and stylish shades is possibly our favourite yet.

Another gorgeous way to wear Breton is as a cardigan or over garment instead of the usual tshirt or long-sleeved top. Supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio looks fresh and classy in this updated version of the Breton look, keeping the nautical stripe modern for 2019.

No matter how you style your Breton Shirt Company top, you can be absolutely sure that you’ll be hitting all the right fashion notes. Since 1917 they’ve been an staple in every fashionista’s wardrobe, so step up your everyday look and pick your own perfect Breton top today.
